With a Little Help From My Friends: Hyperparasitism Allows a Generalist Mistletoe to Expand Habitat Use
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mistletoes largely vary in the number of species that they can parasitize. In temperate rainforests southern Chile, we found two mistletoe species: Tristerix corymbosus, a generalist able to parasitize at least 30 plant species, and Desmaria mutabilis, which only parasitizes Nothofagus trees (that T. corymbosus is unable parasitize). Nevertheless, some parasitized by corymbosus. How this happening? We D. mutabilis individuals, are parasitizing trees. Such hyperparasitic relationship allows be present Nothofagus-dominated forests, otherwise will not possible. Photo 1. flowering during austral winter Nahuelbuta National Park, Chile. Commentary: With a little help from my enteric microbial friends
In a recent mini-review published in Frontiers in Medicine, Ben Berkhout pointed out that the interactions between co-localizing viruses and commensal bacteria in the gastric tract are important for the survival and transmission of a number of virus families (Berkhout, 2015). These viruses are part of the virome or viral metagenome that constitutes the total collection of viruses found in and o...

Apoptosis is an essential form of cell death underlying daily tissue regeneration. In tumor biology, apoptosis resistance is a well-established hallmark of cancer that is targeted by therapeutic approaches. A new study assigns a hitherto-underestimated function to this 'deadly friend': apoptotic cells promote tumor growth, accumulation of tumor-associated macrophages, and angiogenesis.

Although the disciplines of bacteriology and virology frequently come together in the setting of a diagnostic medical microbiology laboratory, the two scientific fields are usually miles apart. The microbiologists basically form two non-overlapping groups of scientists, the bacteriologists and virologists, which go to separate meetings and do not easily intermingle. Some recent research finding...

To invite more students to “test their moods”, Dr. O’Meara and members of the Wellness Peer Education program held the event on the university’s “Library Walk”, a high traffic location. Students passing by were drawn in, thanks, in part, to the great giveaways that were offered. Every student who participated received a Krispy-Kreme donut, a PCS hi-lighter, a Wellness Peer Educator “stress gloo...
